11:28 pm - SO LONG, LIVEJOURNAL! Howdy, folks. As of Jan. 2012, I've stopped posting here at LiveJournal and have transferred my entire blog to Wordpress, where I'll continue using it mostly for photos, daily Twitter archives, and the occasional long-form post (does anyone do those anymore?).
I'm not deleting this account, but rather keeping it as an archive and reminder of all the many years of awesomeness that LiveJournal provided in my life. Starting here in 2003, I discovered a likeminded community of nerds, weirdos, geeks, gays and bears -- many of whom I am still great friends with to this day in real life.
LiveJournal wasn't my first online community -- I'd been chatting for years before that on AOL, IRC and BBSes -- but it was the first one that felt innately collaborative and very much "real-time" with the events of my life. Other services have overtaken -- and accelerated -- the usefulness and sense of community I originally found here, but they haven't quite replaced it. I'll miss it terribly, but forge onward.

07:49 am - HALLOWEEN 2011

Every year, my pal Greg puts together a definitive list of Halloween events around Los Angeles -- haunts, harvest festivals, front-yard decorations, and various other Halloween curiosities. He focuses on the homegrown stuff, only giving passing mention to the teens-with-chainsaws variety of corporate haunts like Universal Studios & Knott's.
In Los Angeles at Halloween time, you find the kind of kooky suburban lawn art that could only pop up in a town filled with pent-up special-effects pros; add in perfect fall weather and you have a season filled with very public displays of peoples' wonderfully bizarre personal passions.
You can see Greg's marvelously curated complete list here. It bears mention that one of my absolute favorite shows is back after a few years of being away: the one-of-a-kind Boney Island!
I will be organizing a free-form caravan to go out on Halloween weekend to a handful of these local haunts. I've posted full event plans and maps to Facebook, so feel free to check them out and RSVP to join us!
